Chapter 18
Bellumia 121577
“Are we there yet? Are we there yet?”
“Argh! It’s not funny anymore! Stop saying that or I will pummel you to pieces!” Lightning wrestled Thunder to the floor of the boat and was about to pound him on the arm when Clara interrupted their wrangling.
“Perfect timing, Thunder. We are there yet. Although precisely where that is, I have no idea.”
Thunder stood up as the boat scraped up onto the sandy shores of the Surangi River. “Why would Vahnar pick someplace like this to hide the Black Sphere? There’s nothing here but hundreds of miles of grassy plains. Couldn’t Counselor Pravus just use one of those scanner things to find the sphere like you and dad did?”
Lybis shook her head. “I have no idea, Vahtees. I do know your father was a brilliant mouse and if he hid it here he had a good reason to. We’ll find out soon enough, I expect.”
Clara hopped from the boat to the sandy shore. “Vahnar specifically wrote Bellumia 121577 at this location on the holomap, plus he drew the red circle with the silver dot in it. Whatever we’re looking for has to be around here somewhere. Let’s spread out and see what we find.”
Thunder and Lighting jumped out of the boat and dashed up into the shoulder high prairie grass. Thunder stretched his arms over his head. “Finally I get to run around instead of being jammed in that boat staring at your scary face.”
Lighting smiled pleasantly, “Oh, and to which boat were you referring? Would that be the one I so thoughtfully named The Vahnar?”
Thunder grimaced. “I promised you one week without a pounding. I’m afraid your week is up.” Thunder smacked his fists together. “And now you shall face the wrath of my deadly fists!” Lightning took off with a shrieking laugh through the tall waving grass.
“Come back and take your pounding like a mouse, you coward!” Thunder darted through the rippling grass chasing after Lightning, though the only part of Lightning he could see were his waggling ears.
As exhilarating as their race was, it was also very short lived, ending abruptly when Lightning gave a loud cry and his ears disappeared beneath the grass. Thunder stopped in his tracks. “Lightning? Are you all right? What happened?”
“Owww! I think I broke my feet!”
Thunder rolled his eyes. “Are you making fun of me? Wait there, little mouseling. I’ll come and rescue you. Or maybe pound you into the ground like a big stake.”
Thunder found Lightning sitting on a gleaming silver platform massaging his foot. The platform was circular, almost a foot tall and eight feet in diameter. Lightning eyed the odd looking structure. “What is that thing?”
“I don’t know, but I do know I almost broke my foot when I ran into it.”
Thunder studied the circular platform. “Clara! Lybis! You need to come see this!” Lightning got to his feet to see what Thunder was pointing at. A single word was carved deeply into its brilliant metallic surface. The word was BELLUMIA.
